From booking a removalist to updating details and everything in between, it’s easy for a move to turn into a stressful process, with some important tasks being forgotten.
But it doesn’t have to be stressful!
Best Rated Transport has created the ULTIMATE in moving checklists. The type of checklist that covers everything from two months before the big move to several weeks after.
We unpack the best parts of Best Rated Transport’s ultimate moving checklist, so that your next move is as easy as possible.
1. Book the Removalist
Step one on the ultimate moving checklist: book a removalist.[/caption]
Booking in a removalist or transport company is the number one job on the moving to-do list. Be sure that you book these services as soon as you know of your settlement/ moving day. These dates are usually known once you have either confirmed settlement with your conveyancer/bank or when you have given notice to your landlord for an intent to vacate.
Don't forget to do your research and book a removalist or transport company that is adequately insured and is known for taking care of belongings in a professional manner.
You are able to find the best transport or removalists available for your job HERE.
2. It’s Time to Declutter and Pack
Next up in the moving to-do list is finding the boxes you need to get the move going… and then filling them.
Start by finding the boxes, tape, wrap and tools you need to secure your belongings. This is, of course, if you choose to pack your belongings yourself. (There are options available for a removal company to pack your belongings for you. However, this will come at an additional cost).
To ensure that you can easily navigate the packing process, don’t forget to declutter and bin anything that you don’t need. Start with one room at a time, working your way through the home as you dispose of anything you no longer need.
Decluttering is the organisational tool that will make packing a lot easier. For you AND your family.
3. Bills, Utilities and Insurances
One of the more time-consuming tasks when moving is ensuring that you finalise bills, utilities and insurances at your old residence, and rearrange to ensure things are up and running when it’s time to move into your new place.
Things like home and contents insurance, having the electricity, water and gas connected when you arrive at your new home, and disconnecting the utilities at the correct time at your previous residence are all top priority to ensure a smooth transition and move.
While there is a bit of back and forth with organising these connections (or disconnections) the power of the internet helps to make this a faster, less complicated process.
4. It's Time to Clean
Once your old property is empty and the space is clear, it is time to clean.
You can complete the clean yourself or utilise the services of a cleaning company who will come and clean the property from top to bottom for you.
In an extensive end-of-lease or vacate cleaning, the whole home is completely cleaned. This includes everything from steam cleaned carpets and mopped floors, to oven and stove cleaning, vacuuming, window cleaning and general tidy up.
If you are renting, you will only get your bond back once the agent has confirmed that the property has been left in a good condition. This is where the importance of a good clean comes in.
In the new place, it is also important to clean before you move straight in. Just to be sure everything is immaculate and ready to be used.
5. Update your Details
With the move in its final stages, it's time to contact the world to let them know that your address is changing.
A really productive way to ensure that your mail is delivered to your new home is to organise a redirection service with your postal carrier. You can choose how long you'd like your mail re-directed and where you would like it sent to.
Along with the redirecting of mail, you should also contact your bank, insurance companies, medicare, licence provider and any other institution that you deal with in your day-to-day living. Updating your address and contact details allows for nothing to be missed, with every important notification or message being sent directly to your new place.
