Cheapest Option for Moving Long Distance: Compare Long Distance Movers

by Jenna Jun 13, 2024

Moving long distance can be costly. Which option is right for you?

There are three main options when it comes to moving long distance. You can do-it-yourself by hiring a moving truck and making the drive yourself, hire a professional removalist company to take the load for you, or hire/buy a container to transport your goods. Which option is the cheapest when moving long distance? Let's take a look at what's involved:

Option 1: Do It Yourself

Hiring your own moving truck is an affordable choice, especially if you are not moving a long way. However, for long distance moves, it might not be the best choice.

One of the main issues with it is that you will need to drive it yourself which means someone else will need to drive your car/cars to your new destination. If you have more cars than drivers available, then you will need to find car transport, which we at Best Rated Transport can also help you with.

TOP TIP: Be sure to always check fuel prices before deciding. Fuel prices are pretty hectic right now and you will need to not only factor in the price of hiring the truck (plus insurance), but also the price of fuelling up on the road.

Another thing to consider when doing a DIY move is that you will need to purchase some moving equipment, such as dollies, blankets and moving straps.

Option 2: Using Professional Removalists

When it comes to moving long distance, by far the most popular option is to hire professional furniture removalists to do the heavy lifting and transporting. This is going to your easiest option but it can also come with some risks. One of the things about professional removalists is that there are A LOT of them. How do you know which ones are accredited, which ones come with insurance and which ones can safely transport your things?

This is where we come in. All of our professional removalists have passed a 7-point comparison which means we know they are accredited, have insurance and are generally really great people. we gaurantee not only the best rate for long distance movers but peace of mind too.

When using long distance movers, what you'll find is that the cost depends on per cubic metre. The more stuff you have, the more your cubic metreage is going to be. You could be looking at anywhere from $100 to $300 per cubic metreage depending on location and company.

A studio apartment is generally around 10m3 while a 2 bedroom house is generally around 20m3. A 3 bedroom house can be around 25m3 to 40m3 and a 4 bedroom house anywhere from 41m3 to 65m3.

Option 3: Hiring or Using Your Own Container

I have to admit that every time I have moved, I didn't even consider this option, but for long distance moves, it's a really smart choice! If you already own a shipping container, you can hire transit only which will save you a huge amount of money. Adding self-pack to the equation is even cheaper but it does mean you need to do the packing yourself (and supply moving equipment).

While container transport isn't always cheaper than using a professional removalist, it is with some long distance moves. It all depends on where you are moving to and where you are coming from. You may find that hiring a container and getting it loaded and shipped to your new home is actually your cheapest option, especially when moving long distance.

Like hiring professional removalists, you don't have to worry about making the drive yourself and containers can carry furniture as well as vehicles (be sure to request this). This is definitely a plus for anyone looking to bypass the long distance drive and just fly to their new home.

If you opt to hire a container, what you will find is that the transport company will drive the container off in your location of choice (such as your front yard) and you will have a week to unpack it before they come and pick it up to take it away.
